The Nissan 1400 is a South African manufactured bakkie produced between 1971 and 2008. Initially, it was sold as a Datsun 1200 and from 1982 onwards the Nissan 1400. In 1985 the Nissan 1400 received a facelift which included a higher cab roof, disc brakes up front and the rectangular headlights.

Nissan released a Sport model in 1988 which was rebadged as a Champ in late 1990. The Sport/Champ featured a five-speed gearbox, a sporty steering wheel, “bucket seats” with a central mounted handbrake, spot lamps, front and rear mudflaps, tonneau cover and a tinted windshield as standard. Electric windows and air conditioning became optional extras later on.

This specific car is a 2006 model with only 76 000 km from new and is complete with all books and spare keys. It was fitted with electric windows and air conditioning from the factory.  The owner of this specific car decided his Champ could become a real sport variant. It was fitted with a small turbo charger and a few supporting modifications. An intercooler and water-methanol injection ensure that everything runs nice and cool. A conversion to fuel injection was also necessary to ensure correct fuelling and efficiency. The conversion was done in 2013 and in 2016 a little more work was done on the engine to make sure it is bullet proof. The car was used as a daily runner for around 4 years before it was replaced with something a bit bigger.

The Nissan 1400 is regarded as a benchmark for the half ton bakkie class. It is known as a car that cannot die and for this it was nicknamed “Champion of Africa”.
