The 356 was the first production car for Porsche. It was a rear-engine, rear wheel drive sports car that was very light and had unmatched handling characteristics. The car was available as a two-door coupe and as an open top. Porsche engineers continued to improve the car in the years of production. This increased the cars’ popularity and contributed to their success on the racetrack. Production started in 1948, and the first 50 cars were produced in Gmund, Austria. The factory relocated to Zuffenhausen in 1950, and production of Porsche 356 continued until April 1965. 76000 cars were produced of which approximately half have survived.

This specific car is a 1958 Porsche 356 A Coupe. It is a numbers match car and has been in one family for 65 years! According to the birth certificate of the car the original colour was silver with black interior but, according to surviving family members, the car was always this colour. The colour is called Porsche Orange and it was a special order colour from the factory between 1956 and 1959. The interior was also changed to a beautiful tan and the car really presents beautifully. This car retains the original 6V electric system and drives like a dream. It was maintained for most of its life by a well-known 356 Specialist in South Africa. This business no longer exists and unfortunately there is only a partial service history available.

It is the opinion of many collectors that the Porsche 356A is the prettiest 356 ever made and it is not difficult to see why! An appreciating classic Porsche that is almost 70 years old and can be driven every day.
