1958 Mercedes-Benz 190 Ponton Sedan
Ponton is the German word for pontoon and is an unofficial nickname for a the W120 and W121 Mercedes-Benz models. The name refers to the ponton styling which was a prominent design language in the 1930s up until the early 1960s. It was a design language that unified the previously articulated bonnet, body, fenders, and side skirts into one sculpted piece. The first Pontons came in 1953, internally known as a W120, and marketed as a Mercedes-Benz 180. It was a four-cylinder sedan and was Mercedes’ second totally new series of cars since World War II. They contrasted very much from the previous 170 models visibly and were also the first monocoque body that Mercedes had ever produced. The first Pontons to go into production came with either a 1.8 L petrol or diesel. In 1956 Mercedes updated the W120 to a W121 and the four-cylinder model received an all-new engine in the form of a short-stroke 1,9 L petrol engine and was sold as a Mercedes- Benz 190.
This specific car is an all-original, unrestored, 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190. It has covered 63,000 km from new. It is finished in a burgundy red with a stunning beige interior. The car starts on the first turn of the key and drives like a typical old Mercedes – like a dream.
These cars were the height of luxury in their day and could still be considered luxurious by today’s standards.
