In late 1987, LSM Distributors, the local Porsche franchise holders, imported 19 cars for a series of 8 races. This included an international champion of champion series. The car was driven initially by Sarel van der Merwe but ended up with the then SA national cricket team captain, Clive Rice, who raced it in Yellow Pages colours. After the series was finished the car was bought by the local LSM workshop manager and after being sold on to another well-known racing driver, was effectively stored away until 2001 when it was bought by an ex-Porsche Club President and fully recommissioned.


The car has since been raced on a limited basis in various Porsche Club Challenge and national races as well as being used for track days and time trials. It was used as a daily driver road car for a number of years but the hard suspension and brutal acceleration in traffic soon stopped that.  The car has just over 65 000 km on the clock with only 35 000km covered since 2001.


It recently had a bare metal re spray to tidy up years of racing and presents superbly. It comes with its original second set of magnesium racing wheels specific for the 944 Turbo Cup. The car has had a recent full-service including replacement of belts, wheel bearings and other service components. Everything is original except for seats and belts which were replaced with superb Cobra items to comply with safety regulations for racing. The exhaust has been de-catted due to local fuel constraints but retains its original Turbo Cup Motronics system. The original back seat which was supplied but not fitted is included.


The Turbo Cup is an exceptionally quick car on the track (and on the road). With a front engine and rear gearbox arrangement it is very stable at high speed and completely neutral in the corners. Turbo Cups came with full sound deadening deleted, unique racing ABS, fiberglass bonnet, magnesium intake and sump, lightened windows and no power steering or window lifts. The suspension is adjustable and bespoke to the Turbo Cup cars.


There are very few of these cars left in the world that have not been tainted. This car is particularly original and was tested by Car Magazine in the April 1988 issue. It had 11000 kms on it at that time.
